Als Hörbuch in der Reihe (Aus den Tagebüchern von Dr. Watson") gehört.
Der Londoner Stadtteil Whitechapel - berüchtigt geworden durch die Taten von "Jack The Ripper" - kommt nicht zur Ruhe, denn wieder treibt des Nachts ein Serienkiller sein Unwesen, der in den Gassen Frauen anfällt und ermordet. Und schlimmer noch: Alle Indizien und Zeugenaussagen weisen darauf hin, dass es sich um einen Werwolf handelt, der die Frauen mit seinen Pranken zerfleischt.
Während Dr. Watson sich durchaus die Existenz eines Werwolfs vorstellen kann, ist Sherlock Holmes fest davon überzeugt, dass hier kein übernatürliches Wesen, sondern ein Mensch in Verkleidung unterwegs sein muss und stellt entsprechende Recherchen an.
Leider ermittelt Holmes überwiegend allein und lässt Watson und damit auch den Leser/Hörer nahezu komplett im Dunkeln, so dass erst im letzten Abschnitt der Erzählung die relevanten Fakten und Ermittlungsergebnisse präsentiert werden und ein Mörder auf frischer Tat überrascht wird. Insgesamt eine recht simple Story ohne Überraschungsmomente, bei der der Leser/Hörer kaum mitraten kann und daher nur wenig Spannung erzeugt wird.
Auch die Idee, hier Whitechapel als Schauplatz zu wählen, wirkt recht abgedroschen, da schon zigmal in Holmes-Pastiches eingesetzt (so hat fast parallel ein anderer Hörbuch-Verlag eine Geschichte mit dem Titel "Die Wölfe von Whitechapel" herausgegeben). Folglich nur 2 von 5 Sternen **
